San Pedro is the town. Ambergris Caye is the island.
Search engines treat the names as twins. Locals do not. San Pedro is the municipality: the airstrip, the water taxi, Front Street, the grocery stores. Ambergris Caye is the whole island — miles of mangrove, beach, and resort road north and south of that town. If your hotel is “on Ambergris Caye,” ask whether you are in town, south, or across the bridge. The answer changes pickup time and, sometimes, the rate.
North island golf carts
Crossing the Sir Barry Bowen Bridge puts you on the north island. Resorts here often look close on a map and feel far after dark. A golf cart is the default. Tell us the property name so the operator can deliver instead of making you walk a cart through town with luggage.
Road quality changes with weather and construction. The paved stretches give way to sand, gravel, and potholes. After a hard rain, take the north road slowly. If an operator has a north-end limit (some still do), we will say so before you confirm — especially if Secret Beach is on the plan.
South of town
South Ambergris is less about Secret Beach and more about quieter sand, residential roads, and a shorter hop back to restaurants. A 4-seater is usually enough. You still want headlights after sunset and a lock on the steering column when you leave the cart at a beach club.
What to rent for the whole island
- 4-seater — couples, or a family of three who pack light. Fine for town plus a Secret Beach day if you do not load the rear with a cooler and four adults.
- 6-seater — groups, extra bags, a cooler, or anyone who hates squeezing onto the rear bench for a 40-minute north run. These book out first. See 4-seater vs 6-seater.
Typical Ambergris Caye rates
The same band as San Pedro: about US$35–$55 a day for four seats and US$50–$75 for six, cheaper by the week. North-island delivery is usually included with partner companies we use; we will flag it if someone wants a surcharge. Compare the current rate ranges and send dates for a live quote.
