Why almost every San Pedro stay includes a golf cart
San Pedro Town is compact on a map and spread out in real life. The airstrip sits at the south end of the commercial strip. Water taxis dock downtown. Many hotels sit a mile or more north or south of restaurants you will want twice a day. Taxis exist, but a cart is cheaper by day two and lets you stop for rum, fruit, or a sandfly shop without waiting on a ride.
That is why golf cart rental in San Pedro is one of the first searches travelers make after they book a room. It is also why carts sell out in February, Easter week, and the first half of July.
Where pickup actually happens
Tell us how you arrive. Operators in town are used to three handoffs:
- San Pedro airstrip — Tropic Air and Maya Island Air. A driver waits with a sign. Have your flight number.
- Water taxi terminal — Belize City, Caye Caulker, or Chetumal boats. Name the company so they stand at the correct dock.
- Hotel or Airbnb — downtown, Boca del Rio, south of town, or across the Sir Barry Bowen Bridge on the north island.
Getting around town in a cart
Three streets matter in the core: Barrier Reef Drive (Front Street, often one-way and crowded midday), Pescador Drive (Middle Street), and Angel Coral Drive (Back Street). Drive on the right, keep it around 10–15 mph in town, and park where you are not blocking a taxi stand or a church. Carry your license. Police do stop carts.

Can a San Pedro cart reach Secret Beach?
Yes. Most 4-seaters and 6-seaters rented in town are allowed over the bridge and west to Secret Beach. Budget 30–50 minutes each way, fill the tank before you leave town, and slow down on the unpaved stretches after rain. Some companies cap how far north you may go — we will confirm that before you pay.
What a day in a San Pedro golf cart costs
