Skip the cart if
- You are staying in the tight center near the Split
- You like walking and can handle sand in the midday sun
- Your group is two people with backpacks, not dive crates
- The trip is two or three nights of snorkeling and ceviche
Rent the cart if
- Kids, grandparents, or anyone who should not walk a kilometer in heat
- The room is toward the quieter north or south
- You have luggage you do not want to drag down a sandy street
- You want shade and a seat between the dock and the room, every day
The supply problem
Caye Caulker has fewer carts than San Pedro. Hourly rentals exist. Advance matching matters more than travelers expect, especially around US holidays. If you know you want one, do not assume the dock will have a spare at 4 p.m.
Split-island trips
A common pattern: cart all week on San Pedro, boat to Caye Caulker for a night or two with no cart. That is usually the right call. If Caye Caulker is the main island, request the cart there and skip the San Pedro fleet entirely.
